Tallinn is a beautiful Hanseatic town situated at the entrance of the Gulf of Finland by the Baltic Sea.
Like most cities with an eight-hundred-year-old past, Tallinn is a patchwork of historic areas. The city's pride and joy is without a doubt its Medieval Old Town, but equally enchanting is the Kadriorg district, a throwback to the time when Estonia was ruled by the Russian Tsars. Other areas of Tallinn are perfect for those who want to get a glimpse of Soviet-era life, or just want to spend time in the great outdoors.

The historic part of town includes St. Catherine's Passage. A collection of craft workshops where artists use traditional methods to create and sell glassware, hats, quilts, ceramics, jewellery, hand-painted silk and other wares. The workshops are housed in the small, 15th- to 17th-century rooms on the south side of the lane, and are set up in an open-studio fashion so visitors can watch the artists at work, be it glass-blowing, weaving or pottery making.

There is of course also a modern side to Tallinn. The city is home to a thriving art scene that ranges from traditional, folk handicraft to modern home designs to edgy installation works.  If you're travelling with a laptop, iPhone or other WiFi-enabled device, you can start by seeing how many unexpected places you can get free Internet. Whether you're walking through a city square, sitting on a park bench or relaxing at the beach, chances are you'll be able to pick up a WiFi signal.

A taste of Tallinn

The Seaplane Harbour is one of the main attractions. With the help of modern multimedia, the Seaplane Harbour in the wooden architecture suburb Kalamaja tells exciting stories about the Estonian maritime and military history promising a “sea full of excitement”. The museum’s display, that comprises of more than a couple of hundred large exhibits, revitalizes the colourful history of Estonia.
Simulators mimicking a flight above Tallinn, around-the-world journey in the yellow submarine, navigating on the Tallinn bay make this museum heaven for kids or adventurous adults.

Seaplane Harbour operates in architecturally unique hangars built almost a century ago, in 1916 and 1917, as a part of Peter the Great sea fortress. These hangars are the World’s first reinforced concrete shell structures of such a great size. Charles Lindbergh, the man who performed the first solo flight across the Atlantic Ocean, landed here in 1930s.

Tallinn has a lot going for it – its Medieval charm, high-quality shops and restaurants, and English-speaking population are just some of its pluses. The city is big enough and interesting enough to explore for days, but also small and compact enough to give you the full Tallinn experience in just a few hours.

Yes, I am sure this heart of mine was made to travel this world.
There is no doubt about it. Whether it is for work, pleasure, family or friends; it is always for discovery.
The world simply has too many extraordinary, wondrous and inspiring places and it is impossible to experience these if you do not travel. It is the journey that counts, the people you meet along the way and memories you take back home.

From Amsterdam, to Bahrain and then to Dubai; I shall be in touch.
Have a splendid day.

hello monday

"The women who follows the crowd will usually go no further than the crowd. The women who walks alone is likely to find herself in places no one has ever been before"
A. Einstein-

This week I am enjoying the company of my cousin and her beautiful baby who are visiting (pancakes and "pepernoten" party for the girls tonight in honour of little Miss D), preparing some Christmas decorations at the house (I am staying positive, will make it to get a tree this week) and packing for my trip on Thursday (completely unlike me to haven't packed yet....how time flies).
It's going to be a busy and fun week.

Wishing you a great week filled with many smiles.

Next month I will be travelling to Bahrain (and Dubai) for a few days.
Am looking forward to exploring this interesting country made up of 33 islands.
To see the historic and the innovative collide.
Enjoying the shores of the Persian Gulf.
Hello Bahrain.

“Once you have traveled, the voyage never ends.
The mind can never break off from the journey.”
-Pat Conroy-

Bahrain is a window to its historic past. With many mosques, minarets and mausoleums, there’s a virtually endless array of things to do in Bahrain. In true Middle Eastern style, the country is a blend of the old and the new, with beaming skyscrapers and majestic embodiments that speak of the fantastic Islamic art, culture and architecture.

The Kingdom of Bahrain (Mamlakah al-Bahrain in Arabic) is an independent country in western Asia, comprised of 33 islands on the western side of the Arabian Gulf. It is also the smallest Arab nation in the entire Middle East. The main island, also called Bahrain, lies 24 km (15 mi) east of Saudi Arabia and 29 km (18 mi) west of Qatar. The capital and largest city is Manama. Bahrain entered recorded history about 5,000 years ago as a commercial trading center.
Long under the influence of more powerful neighbors, it came under the domination of Iran in the 17th century. The Al-Khalifa family, originating from the central Arabian Peninsula, established themselves as Bahrain's rulers in 1783 and has ruled ever since. A series of treaties in the 19th century gave Britain control over Bahrain's defense and foreign affairs. Dominant British influence lasted until Bahrain became independent in 1971.
Bahrain is defined by its relationship with water. Take the country’s name: ‘Two Seas’ in Arabic, the focus is not the island’s minimal landmass, but the water that laps its shores. So shallow is the water lapping Bahrain’s coastline that the inhabitants regularly ‘reclaim’ pieces of land, filling in the gaps between sand bars, as if winning back lost territory. The new Bahrain Financial Harbour of Manama is currently rising like Neptune from such reclaimed land, and its proud buildings, such as the Dual Towers, appear to be holding back the sea. borough market

Borough Market is a wholesale and retail food market in SouthwarkLondonEngland. It is one of the largest food markets in London, and sells a large variety of foods from all over the world.

On our last day in London we spent the morning at the Borough Market. A spectacular place. We had some prosciutto, prosecco, paella, oysters and tasted some sausages, cheeses and sweets. Everyone was exceptionally friendly and eager to inform and have us taste all of the delicious food they had to offer.
We stood in the middle of the market, eating our paella and have small sips of prosecco watching the people go by. Something truly priceless.

If you are ever in London I would suggest you take the time to visit the market.

Good morning and welcome to a beautiful Friday morning.
Today I am off to Amsterdam with my mom and grandmother.
The ultimate girls trip I would say.
It's quite extraordinary to be able to travel with both mom and grandmother, not many people have this privilege and I am extremely grateful it is possible.
We'll be gone for a bit more than 2 weeks and I will try as much as possible to keep the blog up and running.

Have a beautiful weekend.
Smile loads.

an adventure

"Let's go on an adventure"

The "summer" vacation is almost over here on the island, on Thursday the schools start again and most probably the traffic on my way to work will  become a bit less (I am not counting on this). And as many people return to the island from their trips and adventures, I still long for (hmmm, I usually do, this is not an exception), for a journey away from the island. (ah, the next trip is already planned, yet with these wonderful images of Stockholm, Sydney and beautiful luggage, I can't help but to indulge in some day-dreaming).

Have a beautiful day.
